Getting Rid of and Preventing Future Stretch Marks

How can I get rid of stretch marks?

Laser treatments are available to help remove stretch marks. Some evidence has shown that these treatments actually return some elasticity to the skin. In addition, it changes the pigmentation of the stretch marks to make them better match the color of the surrounding skin. Since this is a purely cosmetic surgery, however, it is not covered by insurance.

Many topical applications, such as cocoa butter and vitamin E, are also used to help lessen the visibility of stretch marks. Unfortunately, there is no proof these treatments repair the skin’s elasticity or even remove or lessen the visibility of stretch marks.

To disguise stretch marks, some people use over-the-counter sunless tanning lotions and sprays. Or they get sunless tanning treatments from tanning salons. This helps to even out the skin color throughout the body. Getting a regular suntan, however, actually increases the visibility of stretch marks. This is because stretch marks are scars and scar tissue does not tan like normal, healthy skin.

Body makeup can also be used to decrease the visibility of stretch marks. Most body makeup, however, will not last for long periods of time in water.

Will I ever be able to wear a bathing suit again?

If these solutions don’t work for you, the good news is that choosing the right bathing suit will help cover up stretch marks. For example, many athletes wear what is called “boy short” style bathing suits – and this style is currently very popular. This style of bathing suit covers more of the butt and upper thighs, thereby hiding unsightly stretch marks. High neck bathing suits are also becoming a favorite fashion. This style of suit helps hide stretch marks on the chest.

How do I avoid getting stretch marks?

Aside from monitoring weight gain, stretch marks can be avoided by helping the skin maintain its elasticity. For example, applying lotions and creams prior to the weight gain, and the development of stretch marks, helps the skin stay elastic. Furthermore, keeping the body well-hydrated also helps skin stretch better.

Through watching your weight and taking care of your skin, you can be sure to have beautiful skin for years to come.
