Preventing Stretch Marks While Losing Weight

There are some things that you can do to encourage your skin to regain its elasticity and tighten up as you lose weight. Tighter, firmer skin will show stretch marks less, and won’t sag into jowls and overhangs. Keeping your skin healthy as you lose weight takes a combination of inner and outer care for your body.

First, and most important, is your diet. Especially when you’re cutting calories to lose weight, you need to be careful not to cut out important nutrients. By making sure that your body has the tools and ingredients it needs to repair and rebuild skin as you lose weight, you can avoid looking haggard and saggy instead of like a fresh new you.

Specifically, your body needs Vitamins A, C and E plus zinc in order to properly synthesize collagen – which is what will help firm up your skin and help to repair it. You can take a multivitamin supplement that contains those vitamins and minerals – or you can look for them in the foods that you eat. Go for citrus fruits, broccoli, berries, whole wheat, chicken and turkey – all those foods are high in one or another of those important vitamins for your skin.

Your best bet, though, is a combination of both. Make sure that you eat a wide variety of foods to get the balance of nutrients that your skin needs – and give it a little boost with a good multivitamin to help heal and fade stretch marks faster.

Another excellent thing you can do for your skin while you’re dieting is keep it well-hydrated. Yes, that means lots and lots of lotion and cream. Make it a part of your daily (or nightly) routine to massage a high-quality moisturizer with vitamin E and A into your skin, especially in the areas where you have stretch marks. Every couple of days, pamper yourself with a long soak in a warm (not steamy) tub, and an allover massage with a moisturizer that will lock in moisture, and give your skin all the extra nutrients it needs to look fresh and healthy.

You can also look into some of the special skin care products on the market that are formulated specifically to help fade stretch marks. While there’s not a lot of hard evidence that they work, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence.

The one thing to remember when you’re trying to fade stretch marks is that there are no immediate miracles. As much as we might wish for a magical vanishing crème, it just doesn’t exist. Even options such as laser surgery and dermabrasion won’t result in immediate improvement – nor will any of them completely remove stretch marks. Work on getting the nutrition your body needs to repair and rebuild skin, pamper your skin with lotions and oils to keep it hydrated, and relax with a cup of green tea*.

*yep – it’s good for your skin too! High in antioxidants and vitamins that your skin can use to work on those stretch marks.
