Laser Therapy
To treat stretch marks, laser therapy is another option. Different types
of lasers are used depending on the color of your stretch marks. Stretch
marks which are dark in color (typically newer stretch marks) can be
reduced in color. Faded stretch marks (typically older stretch marks)
can be improved by laser therapy.
Another laser option is one that stimulates the production of collagen.
This could help to improve the skin’s elasticity which could help
improve the appearance of stretch marks.
Like microdermabrasion, laser therapy for the purpose of removing
stretch marks is considered cosmetic surgery and is often not covered by
medical insurance.
It is generally recognized that there is no proven way to permanently
remove stretch marks, but many of these methods will help lesson their
severity or reduce their appearance. It is also recognized that there is
a higher success in lessoning their severity and reducing their
appearance when stretch marks are treated early, when they are still
red. Once they have faded and become scars, it is more difficult to
treat them.
Many people who are concerned about stretch marks are pregnant women or
women who are breast feeding. They need to be particularly cautious when
treating their stretch marks. Many of the topical treatments contain
medicines that can be absorbed into the blood stream or into breast milk
and passed onto babies. It is recommended that pregnant women or women
who are breast feeding stay away from these treatments. Not enough
research has been done on the effects of these topical treatments to
make them safe for babies.
