How do I know if I am at a
greater risk for developing stretch marks? Whether or not a person develops stretch marks depends upon his or her skin’s elasticity, which is determined by genetics. Therefore, if a family member, such as a parent or sibling, has developed stretch marks as the result of weight gain, you have a greater chance of having stretch marks, as well. The severity of stretch marks also depends on how much and how quickly the skin has to stretch. For example, in the case of pregnancy, putting on excess pregnancy weight too quickly will most likely result in stretch marks. For women in their last trimester, when the majority of weight gain occurs, the risk of developing stretch marks is greater. Also, a woman who had stretch marks in a previous pregnancy is more likely to develop stretch marks in subsequent pregnancies. Similarly, a bodybuilder who puts on muscle mass too quickly also increases his chances of developing stretch marks. Therefore, a weight-training program must be developed to slowly add on mass in order to avoid developing stretch marks.
